Q & A's
Q: Do I need a passport to travel back and forth?
A: Yes
Q: Is the country safe? I mean, I know it shares the island with Haiti…
A: Anywhere you travel at any time you need to take precautions. Women, travel w/ your bag across your shoulder. Leave important documents in your hotel safe. Only travel on day excursions with what you need for that day. Be aware at the beach of leaving your camera or mp3 player out while you are in the water. Is it less safe than anywhere else you might travel to? No. Recently Forbes magazine listed the top 10 most dangerous travel destinations and the Dominican Republic was NOT one of them. As for Haiti….Haiti and the Dominican Republic have defined borders and are two very distinct and different countries.
Q: What can I expect when traveling to a 3rd world country?
A: When traveling to the Dominican you will see poverty and trash but the overriding emotion you will have while there is the awesomeness of the landscape, the graciousness of the people, the taste of a great cigar, some of the best water sporting anywhere, and the sounds of the music filled sky. And, while at first you might be filled with the perceived hardship that Dominicans face, remember that we have poverty and hardship here in the United States as well. Please remember when traveling, to treat the people and the land w/ respect. If you see trash, please don’t think it is ok to throw more on the ground. Please try and use any Spanish you might know…Dominicans try very hard to speak to you in your language, please give them the same respect.
Q: Can I drink the water?
A: It is not recommended. Most hotels, and all inclusive resorts, have a filtration system that removes any bacteria. The hole in your ice cube is an indication of filtered water. While out of your hotel, it is best to drink bottled water and not eat from street vendors, as sad as that might be.
Q: Do I need to purchase additional travel insurance?
A: We highly recommend having additional insurance. We hope you never need it, and that you come back thinking it was a waste of money. However, know that there are health emergencies, cancelled flights…and you wouldn’t want to think if only I had spent the additional $50.-
